DEM Open Forum and ESyS-Particle Workshop

You are cordially invited to attend a casual gathering of Discrete Element Method (DEM) enthusiasts to discuss current and future trends in particle-based numerical modelling. This $free Open Forum welcomes anyone who currently undertakes scientific or engineering research using DEM software; either Open Source or proprietary. The purpose is to stimulate discussion about DEM software, techniques and methods in a relaxed and collegial manner. Generous breaks and discussion periods will facilitate collaboration and comradery. The forum will also serve to launch ESyS-Particle v3.0; including the recent additions of Darcy flow and self-gravity.
The agenda for the Forum is outlined below. Participants are encouraged to prepare a brief (5 minute) introductory presentation and to bring their own laptop computers.The Centrepiece of the forum will be a “GenGeo” hackathon in which teams will compete to produce the most creative (and hopefully impractical!) initial DEM particle geometries using the Open Source GenGeo Software. GenGeo is a package for generating complex particle geometries for DEM simulations; which is also maintained by the ESyS-Particle developers. The convenors will supply bootable USB drives preloaded with ESyS-Particle-3.0 and GenGeo-1.4.
For those who are interested to learn more about the software and its usage, the final day will comprise a hands-on ESyS-Particle Scripting Workshop. This will be tailored to those who are interested to make use of ESyS-Particle as part of their research. Other forum participants (including “spies” from other DEM software teams!) are also most welcome to attend the Workshop.
Please note that places are limited to 30 persons. Please do not register until your attendance is confirmed.
As this is a free event, no catering will be provided. However, there are numerous campus cafes within a short distance of the venue.
